Nvidia launches GTX 200 series GPUs

Posted by : 12345

Nvidia today rolled out its next-generation 200-series GPUs, the GeForce GTX 260 and GTX 280.

The series name is at last a concession to the bewildering naming scheme Nvidia has played with in the vast array of GeForce graphics chips. That is — starting now. Customers will still wade through the convoluted model numbers with older offerings.

The 200-series GPUs are fabricated by the Taiwan foundry, TSMC, on a 65nm process that uses 1.4 billion transistors. It's an enormous 576 square millimeters chip and the largest GPU that TSMC has manufactured to date. To compare, the G92 chip (used in the GeForce 8800 and 9800 GPUs) measures 330 square millimeters.

Of course, the wafer real estate required for each chip means greater manufacturing cost, and you can probably guess where that expense is ultimately shouldered. That said, the GPUs pack a lot of punch.

Environmental Initiative Aids Viscose Staple Market

Posted by : 12345
China's domestic viscose staple and cotton linter prices, which have been declining weekly over the past several months, have shown some improvement. The catalyst for these gains was a government initiative to ban the use of plastic shipping bags, creating increased demand for non-woven fabrics. Viscose staple fiber is the main raw material in the non-woven environmental-friendly shipping bags. It appears, prices of the 1.5 Denier 38 millimeter fibers are attempting to stabilize in the 15,800 to 16,000 yuan per ton price range, compared to early February prices of 21,500 yuan per ton, while Grade 2 cotton linters are stabilizing near 3,900 yuan per ton.

Rough Roses luxury Italian leather handbags

Handbags have evolved into a woman's most indispensable accessory; The New York Times recently termed them as the new JewelryThough bags appear on Egyptian hieroglyphics, the handbag as we know it came into being from the 1900s when women started to use it as an accessory. Handbags now reflect the personal taste of the wearer and make as much of an individual statement as a calling card.

In the 1950s, popular handbag designers included Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Hermes. Today these three brands are still popular, along with Gucci, Christian Dior, Fendi, Prada, and Kate Spade.

It is a large market segment with a lot of space and new brands are challenging the dominance of the established brands.

Rough Roses, a luxury, stylish line of Italian leather handbags and belts, has been in the news lately. Already popular with the Hollywood celebrities, Rough Roses recently did a gifting suite for the MTV Movie Awards.

Motorola shares skid to 52-week low

Shares of Motorola Inc. fell sharply Wednesday, as gloomy comments from one of its Chinese cell-phone contract manufacturers magnified ongoing concerns about the health of handset manufacturers.

In afternoon trade, Motorola's shares were down 6.3 percent, or 54 cents, to $8.06. Earlier in the day, the stock hit a new 52-week low of $7.61.

Apple Juicz uses the sun to power MacBook

Posted by : 12345

QuickerTek’s newest Apple Juicz product uses the sun to power the battery on your MacBook, MacBook Pro or MacBook Air, but it will cost you $500, at least. To help defray the cost, QuickerTek is throwing in a free backpack to help you carry the flexible, foldable cell array.

The Apple Juicz comes in three “flavors,” if you will: 18 watt, which recharges a MacBook Air battery in 14 hours; 27 watt, which recharges a MacBook Air in eight hours; and 55 watt, which recharges your MacBook Air in five hours. They cost $500, $600 and $1,000 respectively.

That may sound absurdly expensive, given that the replacement cost of an Apple laptop AC adapter is just a fraction of that price. But QuickerTek president Rick Estes said that it’s right in line with what the market will bear for such a device. “It’s certainly not cheap,” he admits.

And using a regular AC adapter, you can’t charge and power your Mac laptop while camping, or at the beach.

First Blackberry Flip Phone Revealed

Research In Motion (RIM) lived up to its plan of launching a flip phone within the year through its very first Blackberry clamshell, the Blackberry Kickstart.

What many thought to be just plain rumor and hoax has actually come to life. The Kickstart, launching on T-Mobile, came as a pleasant surprise to consumers who were expecting to see a more design-challenged flip phone. The Kickstart makes use of a SureType keypad, and has internal and external LCD’s sized 320 x 240 and 160 x 128, respectively. Menu navigation is through TrackBall, and it sports a 2 mega-pixel camera. It lacks 3G, but has Wi-Fi connectivity. The whole package runs on a 4.6 Operating System.

Philips Announces Ultimate TVs, Blu-ray Player

Besides new healthcare and lighting innovations, the company unveiled their new line LCD televisions and a new Blu-ray player. The new LCD TVs are divided in to three series: 5000 Series, Eco TVs, and 7000 Series.

5000 Series
Philips looks to design a line of televisions that they hope will fit consumers' lifestyles and home décor with the introduction of their 5000 FlatTV series. Adding to improved picture quality, the 5000 Series includes Philips’ proprietary Pixel Plus 3 HD technology that offers a combination of ultimate sharpness, true natural detail, increased depth impression and vivid colors from multiple sources including DVD or Blu-ray content. According to Philips, this advanced technology provides more detail and improved picture color and sharpness. With Pixel Plus 3 HD, consumers reportedly gain a more immersive and pleasurable viewing experience. Along with Pixel Plus 3 HD, the 5000 Series also includes Digital Natural Motion (HD DNM) that helps with the elimination of juddering film effects with increased detail and sharpness. HD DNM produces a smoother impression of moving objects in television material originally recorded for film, which is shot at a slow 24 frames per second (fps). Meanwhile, regular video is shot at 60 fps and all TVs need to display at least 60 fps on screen. Ultimately, HD DNM smoothes the on-screen image by creating and displaying additional pictures between frames to make movements sharper and more lifelike.

Apple settles patent suit over iPhone visual voice mail

Posted by : 12345

Apple has settled a patent-infringement lawsuit over the visual voice mail system used in the iPhone by signing a license for the technology in question.

Klausner Technologies sued Apple and AT&T last December over the visual voice mail feature inside the iPhone, which lets you select and listen to voice mail from a list of messages, just like an e-mail in-box. Reuters reports that Apple, AT&T, and eBay are all now licensees to Klausner's technology, although financial terms of the deal were undisclosed.

AOL and Vonage had already signed deals with Klausner before it came after Apple and AT&T, so there was a pretty good chance it would have eventually prevailed if the case had come to trial. Reuters said Klausner's next targets are Comcast and Cablevision.

Jones Apparel getting boost

Posted by : 12345

Warmer weather and U.S. income tax rebates have begun to fuel demand for clothes and shoes made by Jones Apparel Group Inc (JNY.N: Quote, Profile, Research), the company's chief executive said on Monday.

Sandals, T-shirts and lightweight dresses have been selling particularly well over the past couple months, Chief Executive Wesley Card told the Reuters Consumer and Retail Summit.

"We saw a definitive pickup as the weather turned. I wouldn't categorize it as really robust, but there is less inventory in the channel," Card said, meaning that retailers were taking on less stock to avoid having to take big markdowns to move unsold merchandise.

Jones Apparel makes clothes and shoes under names including Jones New York, Nine West and Anne Klein, and sells its goods through department stores and its own stores.

Skyscraper of steel toy parts sparkles in New York

Posted by : 12345

A million pieces of stainless steel toy parts assembled into a nearly seven-story model skyscraper glimmered under the hot sun in New York on Tuesday, in American artist Chris Burden's latest project.

The 16,000-pound (7,250-kg) "poetic interpretation" of the 30 Rock Building at Rockefeller Center was made of replicated Erector set pieces from the toy created by A.C. Gilbert in 1912, Burden said.

"He was inspired by the buildings to build this toy system and I used this toy system to build a building," Burden said.

"It's a poetic interpretation of 30 Rock, it's not a model of it. It references all the tall buildings in Manhattan," Burden said, standing near his 65-foot (20-metre) tower.

The project, assembled by 20 to 30 people using screwdrivers, began in late 2006 and was put together in Los Angeles County and trucked across the country in two parts.

EU new directive more than doubles cases of "substandard" Chinese toys

Posted by : 12345

The European Union (EU) filed reports on cases of substandard toys from China last year 117 percent more than in 2006, affected by a new EU directive on toy safety and massive recalls by U.S. toy makers.

The EU members filed 398 notifications about toys through Rapex-China, a rapid alert system for non-food consumer product safety between the EU and Chinese governments, according to a work report given by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of China (AQSIQ) to Xinhua on Tuesday.

The report said the large increase was partly due to the implementation of an EU directive that prohibited the use of phthalate (an additive that affects the flexibility of plastic) intoys and child care articles from last January.

"EU members focused on the inspections of phthalate in toys in 2007, which led to the increase of 105 notified cases in 2007," said the report. "But it must be noted that many of the toys were exported to the EU before 2007.

TOYS: EU continues to monitor Chinese production

Posted by : 12345

A Report by the European Commission claims that weaknesses are still visible in the Chinese toy industry.
The report claims that smaller Chinese manufacturers are struggling to ensure their products meet the standards required, as they lack knowledge of proceedures and staff training.

In recognising that the Chinese authorities have made a lot of progress in tightening testing proceedures and tackling abuses of the system, the report has made a further 50 reccommendations on how to tighten up safaety procedures, including warning about the dangers posed by magnets in toys.

European consumer affairs commissioner, Meglena Kuneva, is due to show the report to Chinese officials next month.

Kuneva said: "Despite the many efforts undertaken by the various actors in the toy supply chain the recall show there are still too many unsafe toys appearing on the EU market."

Pekoppa--Toy Plant for Lonely People

Posted by : 12345

I know it's advisable to talk to plants when growing them, but isn't Sega Toys overdoing it just a bit by actually manufacturing toy plants people can talk to? Yeah sure, it's a bit cute at first, but five minutes into the "conversation" and I'll probably opt not to speak at all. Pekoppa is a toy plant with a built-in IC chip which identifies intonations and rhythms of human speech. Whenever someone starts talking near it, the plant bends to mimic the very human action of nodding; creating an illusion that someone's actually listening to your woes. In fact, Pekoppa's marketing tag line is: "Heal yourself with this plant, which is a good listener!"

Sega Toys will start selling Pekoppa by September 30 for $22, and hopes to sell a total of 200,000 toy plants this year. I don't get it, if there are 200,000 lonely people willing to buy the plant, wouldn't it be much better if some of them got together instead? Better yet, they should grow real plants to help prevent climate change even the tiniest bit. But to each his own, and if Pekoppa helps make some lives a lot better, then I'm all for it.

Subaru Suspends 2.5 Turbo Sales 2008-2009

Posted by : 12345

Subaru has issued a stop-sale order, suspending sales of all 2008/2009 cars equipped with its 2.5 liter turbocharged engine until they can be inspected. Cars that have already been sold are being brought back for inspection.

The point of concern is engine knock that develops due to premature big-end connecting rod bearing wear/failure. The engine knock results under power when ignition drives the piston and con rod hard into the crankshaft journal, rather than the force being carried by the journal bearings' hydrodynamic lubrication.

Subaru did not identify the specific rod bearing problem, other than some indication it may be due to bearing contamination occurring during the engine assembly process or shortly afterward. Several experts noted this might also include instances where the block was not cleaned properly prior to assembly; in that case, excessive machining and forging contaminants would wash through the oil passages and into the bearings.

Wireless carriers gear up for hands-free device law

Posted by : 12345
Metro PCS, the wireless phone company, is giving earpieces to anyone who walks into any of its 12 company-owned stores in the Los Angeles area on or before June 8, according to Sarika Patel, a spokeswoman for the business. "It's a way for us to help celebrate Wireless Safety Week and to get people ready for the new state law," she said. A bill prohibiting the use of hand-held cell phones while driving goes into effect July 1, and wireless companies are gearing up for the switch. The bill, SB 1613, was proposed by state Sen. Joe Simitian, D-Palo Alto, in hopes of reducing collisions caused by distracted driving. Verizon Wireless spokesman Ken Muche said his company led the way on helping push for safe cell phone legislation. "This is something we've been educating customers about for a long time," he said. He recommended that those with cell phones break open users manuals to find out if their devices already have speakerphone and hands-free options.

It's not going to win any "world's thinnest" records with an 18.05mm waistline, but those five rows of textual healing don't come without a price. The first batch of devices will be Europe-bound in "late summer" with 900 / 2100MHz 3G alongside the quadband GSM and EDGE; North and Latin American versions are promised for later in the year.

iPhone rumor for today

Posted by : 12345
It's almost certain Apple CEO Steve Jobs will unveil the latest version of the iPhone Monday, when he speaks at the company's annual Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco. The gadget will go up for sale shortly thereafter. The company has been quietly positioning millions of units of a mysterious new product in key markets since March.

The look and feel of the phone, however, remains a mystery. Security at Apple's headquarters is tight. Rank-and-file staff say sensitive projects are draped with cloth before they're even brought into work. What we know for sure though is that sales of the iPhone are fading fast and Apple will have to do something very soon to get those phones moving.

The iPhone could be just the start of what Jobs announces next week. Veteran Apple watchers are noting a redesign of Apple's hot-selling notebook computers is long overdue. Some are even wondering if Apple will introduce a touch-sensitive table tablet that riffs off the iPod Touch's touch-sensitive interface.

Seems to me like LG are trying to get as much money they can get out of the Viewty series, instead of concentrating their efforts on new models.

Engineers Use Bluetooth to Track Travel Times

Posted by : 12345

Engineers have created a way to use cell phone Bluetooth signals to determine how long it takes vehicles and pedestrians to travel from one point to another. The method envisioned by engineers at the Indiana Department of Transportation offers a low-cost solution for everything from the speed of the morning commutes to the sluggishness of airport security lines.

"This is incredibly valuable information that could be used for many purposes, including better traffic signal timing and management of construction work zones to reduce congestion, as well as real-time traffic information for motorists," said Darcy Bullock, a professor of civil engineering at Purdue University. "Now we have a way to measure how slow traffic is on a given stretch of road or how long it's taking people to get through airport security at a given concourse and time of day."

Bullock is developing the method with Jason S. Wasson and James R. Sturdevant, engineers from the Indiana Department of Transportation.

"We came up with the idea at INDOT and developed the prototype this year from off-the-shelf hardware," Wasson said.

The method picks up the identifying "addresses" from Bluetooth devices in consumer electronics. Because each device has its own distinct digital signature, its travel time can be tracked by detectors installed at intersections or along highways and other locations.

Stock market joins in three-minute silence

Tag: Building materials The stock market, along with mainland futures markets, joined the nation in the three-minute silence to mourn the earthquake victims on Monday. The two stock exchanges in Shanghai and Shenzhen, the commodity exchanges in Zhengzhou and Dalian, and the Shanghai Futures Exchange suspended trading at 2:28 pm, the exact time the earthquake struck a week ago. Stocks of companies seen as playing a part in the reconstruction following the quake, such as pharmaceutical, food and cement industries, showed strongly yesterday, reflecting a recovery of investor confidence in the A-share market, analysts said. Southwest Pharmaceutical Co Ltd surged to close at 14.81 Yuan. Shandong Lukang Pharmaceutical Co Ltd, an antibiotic manufacturer, jumped 6.45 percent to close at 7.76 Yuan. Shares of Chongqing Road & Bridge Co Ltd soared to the daily limit for the fourth consecutive day after the quake as the company is expected to receive large orders for reconstruction. Sichuan Road & Bridge Co Ltd, which has surged 10 percent for three consecutive days, announced four of its projects, totaling 400 million Yuan, are expected to suffer a loss because of the earthquake. The company's shares were suspended from trading yesterday. Real estate companies fell as home sales in major cities slid in the past week. Real estate projects by some major property developers are also expected to be hit or postponed because of the earthquake. China's largest real estate developer Vanke slid 4.2 percent to close at 20.75 yuan. "In Chengdu, Vanke has five ongoing projects and two are in the pipeline this year," said Xue Hebin, an analyst at Orient Securities. But Xue added the quake won't dent Vanke's earnings much because its net profit in Chengdu accounts for only 4 percent of the company's total.
