Let's Grow them now: Part II

Miracle fruit.Last week, we began a series on exotic fruit trees that can begrown locally. We featured: macadamia nuts, cashews and purplepassion fruit. This week, we continue the series with a closer lookat pond apple, miracle fruit and Barbados gooseberry.

A visit to the Rural Agricultural Development Agency's (RADA)display at the annual Denbigh Agricultural show earlier this monthrevealed a variety of exotic fruit trees that can be grown righthere in Jamaica. So, our question is, why are we not planting moreof these fruit trees for domestic and export markets? Have we notseen what can be done through the output from Tru Juice, or do wewant to continue importing concentrate?

According to Locksley Waites, fruit tree crop coordinator at RADA,there is just not enough land in the hands of small farmers. Toestablish a successful orchard, one would need large acreages forat least 20 years because many of the crops take up to 10 years tobegin showing profitable returns. Others begin bearing as early as18 months after planting, with proper care.

But in spite of efforts to get more lands into the hands ofordinary citizens, there is still a far way to go. Since 2000, some1,500 hectares of fruit trees have been planted and more than400,000 plants and seedlings have been delivered.Waites also told Food

Super-premium juice makes its mark as health and wellness trend ...

Posted by : liruitootoo06

Super-premium juice has emerged as a small but dynamic part of theAmerican beverage marketplace, according to a new study from theBeverage Marketing Corporation titled Superpremium Juice in the U.S.: The Impact of Superfruits andAntioxidants.

The super-premium sub-segment includes fresh packaged juice, whichis 100% (or very close to 100%) fruit juice that is bottled insingle-serve containers and shipped fresh rather than reconstitutedfrom concentrate or chemically preserved. These juices aregenerally more perishable than “regular” juices, although marketers have worked to improve their shelf life. Thesuper-premium group also includes juices that are not freshpackaged but are similarly positioned, carry high prices and areshelved in stores’ produce sections. Exciting new ingredientsare often used in such products, often including so-called“superfruits”.

The sub-segment registered phenomenal growth during the period from2002 to 2007, as volume jumped from 142.7 million litres to 293.4million litres. Sales as measured in wholesale dollars increased ata stronger rate than volume, reflecting the impact of the premiumpricing characteristic of the beverage type. Super-premium juicesales first approached half a billion US dollars in 2005 and thenclimbed to $587 million the following year. Super-premium juicegarnered $75.2 million, or 12.8%, more in 2007 than it had the yearbefore.

Juice looks for redemption against Mizzou

Shared misfortune brought Illinois teammates and roommates Juice Williams and Chris James together on the Edward Jones Dome sideline Sept. 1. Theirconversation wasn't pleasant, but memorable.

James, a potential starter at wide receiver, already knew hewouldn't be playing that day against Missouri after tearing his ACLin training camp. Williams started the game at quarterback, determined to muzzle his doubters after an erratic freshman season, but left in the second quarter after taking a blow to the head fromMissouri's Hardy Ricks on a 4-yard run.

Together, they watched as backup quarterback Eddie McGee rallied Illinois to within six points before throwing aninterception at the goal line in the final minute.

"He talked to me about not finishing the game," James said ofWilliams. "He was real sad and upset."

"He took that loss to heart," added Illini linebacker Brit Miller.Fast-forward to Monday as Williams and James sat in the film roomat Memorial Stadium studying Missouri. This time they spoke with atone of optimism, sensing the opportunity that soon awaited

Review: Iomega DVR Expander is the Perfect Solution to Your HD ...

Posted by : liruitootoo06

Iomega DVR Expander Drive When is an external hard drive not a hard drive? Apparently, whenit's a DVR expander. In a perfect world, these glorified driveswould be wholly unnecessary, as any device fitted with a USB,Firewire or eSATA port would work seamlessly with a similarlyequipped external HDD.

Instead, we get various iterations of DVRs, each with crippled ornon-functioning expansion ports. And once we're done silentlycursing the darkness and/or clogging them up with unwatchedepisodes of Golden Girls, then we get to choose from range ofspecial purpose drives  each "certified" to work withthis or that digital video recorder.

Review: Elgato EyeTV 250 Plus

Posted by : liruitootoo06

By Lauren Hirsch (photos by Aaron Steinfeld) From the outset, Elgato has a problem with its Eye TV 250 Plus. Inthis age of products that promise to Sbring your computer to yourTV, such as AppleTV, TiVo, and even the Nintendo Wii with itsweather and news clipping services, Elgato has decided to be thesalmon of the computer world, swimming against the current to bringyou a product that promises to Sbring your TV to your computer.

In all fairness, it"s not such a bad premise (also, salmon istasty. Hey, I"m pregnant. I think about food a lot.) After all, what is a TiVo or an Apple TV? It"s a processor and a hard drivein a box. Perhaps you"re thinking, SHey, I"ve already got oneof those. SExactly, says Elgato. And maybe--justmaybe--you"re the streamlining type who would like to consolidatethose functions into one fabulous app. Killer app, you ask?Perhaps, depending on your needs. TiVo killer? Well, not so fast.

Pinnacle PCTV HD Pro Stick (801e) USB TV Tuner Gadgeteer Hands On Review by Julie

August 18, 2008

I'm a minimalist. The problem is that I'm a minimalist that has toomuch stuff. ;o) For those of you that might be true minimalists, Ihave a nifty USB doo-dad to show you, that has the potential toallow you to ditch your High Def TV and DVR. It's the PCTV HD ProStick (801e) from Pinnacle Systems. With it, you can use your Windows laptop or desktop computer asyour TV and DVR. Let's take a look.

I'm sure that you've all been seeing the public serviceannouncements on TV regarding the fact that as of February 17thnext year, analog TV signals will be going bye bye. This tuner willallow you to pull in DTV (digital TV) channels over the air or viayour cable company.

TiVo filling up? DVR expanders provide more room to record

Posted by : liruitootoo06

But as with any other hard-drive-based contraption, DVRs havelimited storage. All too often, in arranging to record a program onmy TiVo HD DVR, I've received the dreaded "not enough disk space"warning. That means deleting shows I haven't watched yet or, worse, wiping out recordings I want to hang on to for posterity.

TiVo fills up even faster when I record programs inhigh-definition. HD claims roughly 10 times the amount of space asstandard-definition recordings.

The Iomega DVR Expander Drive and Western Digital My DVR Expanderdrive I've been testing promise to increase your DVR's storagecapacity, so you won't have to fret about it for a long time.

The Iomega and Western Digital boxes both cost $200 and have 500gigabytes of storage, equaling about 300 extra hours ofstandard-definition or up to 60 hours of high-def programming. Byadding the Western Digital drive to my TiVo, I upped its capacityto up to 927 standard-definition or 98 high-def hours. You'd haveto watch an awful lot of TV to exhaust that much storage.

The two drives are about the size of a chunky hardcover book; theWestern Digital box is a little thicker and shorter than theIomega.

You may ask: "Why do I need a DVR expander when I've got an unusedexternal PC hard drive? Couldn't I just plug it into the DVR's USBport?"

It's not that simple. The USB ports on TiVo, for instance, cannotbe used for external storage. Instead, the DVR expanders connect toa different port, called eSata, which TiVo says is more reliableand robust. (I use the USB on my TiVo for a Wi-Fi adapter.) If youdo have an eSata drive, you can probably make it work with TiVo byemploying an easily found online hack — except there are noguarantees, and you won't have TiVo's blessing.

MICA's latest art piece

Posted by : liruitootoo06

The Gateway, the new mixed-use student life building at Maryland InstituteCollege of Art, will have its debut Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. Thedormitory spiraling upwards on the corner of North and Mount Royalavenues sits along my daily commute. I have watched its progressskyward from the first stages.

The piered doughnut-meets-block structure is anything but aGateway. It fails to impress any fully perceivable shape or entityin three-space to the viewer but rather presents a puzzling massthat bends into the incomprehensible – a tangle that seemsobscured in the periphery even when looking right at it. Thetranslucence is brilliantly applied – though not ascohesively as with MICA’s other stanchion, the Brown Center, further down Mount Royal.

The word MICA in bright, not quite neon, white lights screams outfrom the cityscape to night drivers along I-83 but somehow adsbalance to Male/Female in front of Penn Station (incidentally Ireside in what I sense is the tiny minority of those that do nothate that piece). Somehow that MICA sign is the exemplar of whatmakes the building work.

There is a mess of green order – lights and panels that wouldlikely appear the wrong shade of green in any context. My favoritepart is the concrete wall at street level along North Avenue.Solid, gray, triangular but sleek and somehow comforting.

Despite or due to its quirks, the building, born out of a creativecompetition among international offices of RTKL, succeeds where somany fail. This post is evidence of that. Whither it is liked orhated, the Gateway is creative. It is interesting. It will betalked about. Unlike so much of what is made today it is unique andimaginative. Once again, MICA has added something to the city.

PLANS to reduce Frankston's intensive-care paramedics are"ludicrous" and lives could be lost, emergency services volunteersbelieve.

"It's absolutely ludicrous to reduce the MICA 6 team unit from atwo-person ambulance to one person in a sedan," the road accidentand rescue lieutenant with Langwarrin CFA, Robert Hosegood said.

"Of course they should remain as a team. What happens when you senda MICA sedan and then you're waiting for an ambulance?

"If a MICA officer turns up in a sedan, where will the patient betreated? On the side of the road?

"If we're trying to release someone from a motor car accident, itwill mean a crew member will have to assist the MICA paramedic. This means we'll be a man down."

MICA's Gateway - a full review

Posted by : liruitootoo06

Sunday I toured the new student life building, the Gateway, at Maryland Institute College of Art. The piered structure letspedestrians get further underneath the building without yet feelingclose to it. The concept of a curved façade is attempted by

straight segments – an effect that ends up expressing morebroken angularity than curvature. If the desire is to truly giveoff the impression of a smooth curve, architects need to convincetheir clients that the added cost of curved construction really isgoing to be worth the end result. If RTKL wasn’t really goingfor total curvature, than I’m just not a fan of the facetedaesthetic.

MICA building is unusual, unpredictable, exciting

Posted by : liruitootoo06

Welcome to the Gateway, a new building for the Maryland InstituteCollege of Art that was designed to keep people guessing.

The $32 million structure, which opens later this month at 1601 W.Mount Royal Ave., represents the college's latest expansion intonew territory, beyond its traditional campus, in the heart ofBaltimore's Mount Royal cultural district.

The architect, RTKL Associates, underscored the idea of expandingwith a design that enters new architectural territory as well.

The 10-story building provides housing for 217 upperclass studentsin 63 apartments, as well as 42 studio spaces, a career developmentcenter and arts-related spaces for the community, including a"black box" theater, gallery and cafe.

The goal, designers say, was to create a building whose exteriorexpresses what's going on inside. But it does so slowly, at its ownpace, as one moves through the building. It gives the impression ofa structure that's in a formative state, rather than 100 percentcomplete.

"It constantly leaves you with a bit of a question, which waspretty intentional on our part," said architect Douglas McCoach, who was a principal at RTKL during the design phase and isreturning to RTKL after serving 19 months as Baltimore's planningdirector. "It reveals itself, but not entirely and not all at once. You're rewarded the more you move around it. You constantly see andlearn new things about it."

As power plays truant, inverter sales soar

Pune, August 05

Demand so high that distributors run out of stock, batteries too inshort supply

If there has been one beneficiary to the long power cuts that thecity has faced over the last fortnight, it is the manufacturers ofinverters. The demand for inverters has skyrocketed and sales goneup manifold. Major distributors are, however, are short ofbatteries, adding to the customer woes

For the last one-and-a-half years, the sale of inverters was at alow due to the uninterrupted power supply pilot project in thecity. Now, constant load shedding has turned the situation on itshead, with two leading inverter brands selling 4,000 units in thelast 20 days.

The demand for inverters by domestic consumers has gone up so muchin the last one month that it has become difficult to meet themarket demand, said Abhijeet Pardeshi, sales manager, ShantiPowers, sole distributor of leading brand Sukam inverters in thecity.
