Party all night at swank Ivy Hotel bathtub SAN DIEGO — I'd heard about the Star Suite before I'd everbeen to the Ivy Hotel. Details such as the two king-size bunk bedsdecked out with chains on both sides, the shower meant for six andthe elevated stripper pole in the living room.A suite such as this gives you a pretty good idea of what the Ivyis all about: a place that's decidedly about play, not slumber.I like a good party hotel, even better when it's well designed andnot a W knockoff. What I don't admire is the less-than-keen serviceone often gets from such places. You're lucky to get a wakeup callthe next morning so you can make the hung-over flight back home.The 179-room Ivy is in San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter, a swankhistoric hotel that was one of the first in town to have bathroomsin all its rooms. After a stint as a transient hotel, Ivy returnedin the spring of 2007, complete with a $98 million renovation.When my two friends and I are shown to our respective rooms, thefloor's butler, Joseph, introduces himself. Butler? After all, theprice for a premium room such as mine is reasonable at $349.The room itself is provocative. The sleeping area and bathroom areseparated by a clear glass cube — the bathtub/shower. Thebathtub is almost 3 feet tall — bad hip? This one's not foryou.
